Student Showcase: Max Zimmerman

By One River School

How long have you been a student at One River? I have been at One River since I was in 4th grade, so it’s been about 4 years (I think!). Tell us a little bit about your journey as a young and developing artist? I have always enjoyed art. I can’t remember a time I didn’t like to draw or paint. I have learned many skills at One River that have helped me a lot to improve as an artist. I have also met many great teachers there! I am a homeschooler who is enrolled in a distance learning school. The curriculum has lots of artistic assignments, so I use many of the skills I have learned to complete them. I am also developing my skills in photography at One River. My family and I love to travel so having skills in photography is great for documenting our trips.…

Art Shuffle®: Kids Identify: Objects & Patterns Grades 3-5 Overview: Students made an autobiographical assemblage consisting of objects and spaces that represent them. Students learned about: creating a diorama of a room or space that represented them. They learned various techniques including plaster, collage, and acrylic painting. Artist Inspiration: Njideka Akunyili Crosby I love how thoughtful the students were about what objects they created in the space, and how the objects created a narrative that represented them personally. They were very innovative and took pride in coming up with creative uses for collage materials to create the textures and looks that they were aiming for.

By One River School

I was always interested in creating since I was a young girl, taking apart old shirts to see how they were made, so I could fashion patterns to create new ones. And for a brief time, I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer, but my heart was set on math and science so I could eventually work for NASA. So, art took a backseat. I originally went to college for a degree in math and science. During my first year in college, I got a job as a teacher’s assistant at a local art school, and completely fell in love with imparting artistic knowledge onto children. I was teaching students 18 months- 3 years, and watching them grow and change using art as a vehicle became my passion. I…

Educator Showcase: Kate Annen

By One River School

Tell us a little bit about you and your background. My name is Kate, and I was born and brought up in South Africa, where I had a comprehensive education in Fine Art and History of Art! My marriage took me to Germany where I lived for 7 years and took every possible chance to travel in Europe before finally moving to the States 20 years ago. My husband, three kids and I have enjoyed every aspect of American life and feel at home here.   What attracted you to work at One River School? One River gave me the opportunity to get back into teaching art again, to all ages, levels and in a variety of art disciplines. I was particularly intrigued by the One River approach of introducing Contemporary Artists through power point presentations and the subsequent projects that evolve for the students. The versatility and flexibility of…
