Educator Showcase: Kate Annen

Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
My name is Kate, and I was born and brought up in South Africa, where I had a comprehensive education in Fine Art and History of Art! My marriage took me to Germany where I lived for 7 years and took every possible chance to travel in Europe before finally moving to the States 20 years ago. My husband, three kids and I have enjoyed every aspect of American life and feel at home here.

What attracted you to work at One River School?
One River gave me the opportunity to get back into teaching art again, to all ages, levels and in a variety of art disciplines. I was particularly intrigued by the One River approach of introducing Contemporary Artists through power point presentations and the subsequent projects that evolve for the students. The versatility and flexibility of the curriculum together with the passion of all the people involved, is wonderful.
How would you describe what it is like to teach here?
One River has created an environment which is unique, open and creative. The classroom space is friendly, safe and disciplined which is ideal for students to work and develop their talents. The variety of projects and the exploratory nature of the classes is ideal and evident in the enthusiasm of the students. There is a diversity which offers a varied dimension to my teaching, which I really love.
What makes attending classes at One River fun and compelling?
Classes at One River are always challenging, entertaining and fun. The changing curriculum, creative projects and openness to new ideas and approaches in art makes for an exciting experience for the students. One Rivers offers an environment where students feel comfortable and can follow their artistic passions in a disciplined way, and that is special!

Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?
I enjoy the times where we critique work during class and am always intrigued and surprised by the comments, ideas and responses that are raised. Young minds offer such different perspectives which is fascinating. The student exhibitions are also extraordinary as they showcase all the talent and encapsulate the vibe and work at the school.
What do you enjoy outside of One River?
My life outside One River is very art orientated as I continue with my own painting as well as work with breast cancer patients doing areola tattooing and scar camouflage (see: www.finaltouchbykate.com). I love to travel and will go just about anywhere! On weekends I enjoy cycling, hiking, swimming and socializing with friends. Finally, any chance I get to see my own kids, I’m all in!
