Art Shuffle®: Digital: Teen Words to Live By Grades 6-12 Overview: Students designed an editorial illustration for a provided article title/quote, making use of a visual metaphor. Students learned about: creating imagery that seeks to convey the essence of an entire saying within a single visual graphic. Artist Inspiration: Pete Ryan Every student found many ways to take common sayings and incorporate a humorous visual twist. The excitement for their project ideas helped push students to learn more complicated tips and tricks in Adobe Illustrator.

Most of the vacations I had growing up were not to tropical destinations or historic monuments, but a 40-mile drive away from the Illinois suburbs to “the city” of Chicago. Our frequent trips to the Art Institute of Chicago are some of my earliest memories and were my first introduction to a life-long obsession with the visual arts. In addition to being an “art kid” throughout my childhood and teen years, I went on to study Art Education and obtain my K-12 Illinois teaching certification with hopes of educating and inspiring others interested in the study and practice of making. After teaching K-12 art in public schools, my career shifted to working in higher education with adults as a creative programs recruiter. Read MoreAva is 17 years old, and has been a student at One River in Englewood, NJ for 3 years. Tell us a little bit about your journey as a young and developing artist? I’ve always liked doing art. When I was younger I would sit outside painting the concrete with water and a plain paintbrush because my mom hated messes. It would dry and I would do it again and again. When I got into middle school I got really into art and took classes and watched as many YouTube videos as I could. Which has been your favorite project to work on at One River and why? In an animation class, we started off with something that we hated drawing and we morphed it into something we liked drawing. I made a house turning into flowers, it was one of my favorite projects!
