Cameron Welch: Winner of the One River Emerging Art Award
I am thrilled to announce that One River has taken another step towards supporting emerging artists by presenting the first annual One River Emerging Art Award to Cameron Welch. We have been hard at work for the last seven years teaching art and presenting exhibitions in our schools. Now we are accelerating our ability to advocate for and to help emerging artists in their professional journeys by recognizing them nationally and providing financial support to them as well.
As part of this award, we are also providing Cameron with his first New York solo exhibition! This four-day pop up event opens on April 30th and will coincide with the Frieze Art Fair week in New York. Make no mistake, Cameron’s work is as compelling as any you will see at Frieze and it is a testimony to his intelligent process and inventive language, which have been culled from history and personal experiences.
I have been to Cameron’s studio a few times and understand the importance artmaking plays in his life and the stories he’s able to tell. The artwork is musical and in some ways seems simple, but when you really “listen to them”, the tone, the story and the composition are so deep and personal to his roots as a biracial young man from the Midwest. In addition to the compelling artwork he creates, you will not meet a more thoughtful, intuitive, likable and hardworking person. Cameron is everything I look for when I think about the key elements that drive success in this unbelievably demanding and difficult journey that he has embarked on.
I am proud to award him with this honor and I am humbled by the chance we have to help more artists in the future. I urge everyone in proximity to New York to see this event in person…it will move you. Check out the video that Phillips recently created about Cameron here.
Giving back is a key driver for One River. I am grateful to be doing what I do and I appreciate the inspiration that Cameron and so many artists provide me and our community.
