Team Showcase: Eileen Guerrero Mateus
Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
I’m a Colombian artist. I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration with a minor in Art History. I’ve been creating ever since I can remember, and have always loved to express myself through my art. Growing up in Colombia and moving to the states has given me so much perspective and being an immigrant is a big part of my identity.
What attracted you to work at One River School?
I’ve been working at One River since March 2023, I started out as a Teacher Assistant, after graduating from college and was very eager to get in the classroom to share all of my knowledge with our younger generations, as well as learn who I am in the classroom. I have since grown into a Lead teacher and then into my ADOMS position. One River has given me the opportunity to explore a lot of sides of myself and working at a place where the effort is seen and recognized is very valuable.
How would you describe your team?
My beloved Hartsdale Team is the best! It’s such an honor to work next to such hardworking, dedicated and determined women. We all keep ourselves motivated and care for one another. I know I can always count on the team for ANYTHING.
What do you think we do best at One River?
I think one of the best things about One River is the range of mediums and subjects that we offer, especially the summer camps. I think there’s something so special about the incredible projects students are able to create thanks to the curriculums and on top, be able to exhibit them and be celebrated at the end of the week. It’s my favorite part of the summer and I genuinely wish One River was around when I was younger.
Is there a special One River moment, ideally related to our adult program or an adult student, that stands out for you?
It’s always really special to see Adult students who were hesitant about joining due to no prior art experiences find their own voice through art and find some sense of community in the classroom as well.
Who or what motivates you?
Getting to build positive relationships with our students and members motivates me the most. I really value what we do here at One River and really wish I had this growing up, so I do my very best to get to know students to be able to guide them in the right direction of their artistic journey as well as making sure the parents feel the passion I have to making every interaction a positive one.
What do you enjoy outside of One River?
Outside of One River, you can find me in my own little bubble creating and enjoying my alone time. I am an avid solo adventurer, whether it’s going to concerts alone, finding new thrift locations and taking trips there to being at home having little creative dates with myself. I love to paint, go to art museums to draw, junk journal and sew/flip a lot of my thrift finds into new clothing pieces.
I’m an only child and being in my own little bubble in my free time is where I thrive, I think learning not only how to be alone but also knowing you only need yourself to create memories and fulfill your soul is very important.
