Educator Showcase: Bryant Franco
Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
Hi! My name is Bryant and I’ve been an artist genuinely my whole life. When I was little I would remake movies that I liked into comic books and would even make my own yearbooks with printer paper and staple it together and have my friends sign them. Now I focus on illustrations and comic book making.
What attracted you to work at One River School?
When I moved to Millburn, I wanted a job in my field, which is art, and I’d been substituting at schools near me so I had some teaching experience. I applied and they enjoyed my work and were happy to have me teach their manga and comic classes!
How would you describe what it is like to teach here?
Incredibly fun and open for conversation. The lesson plans provided are incredibly in-depth for teachers and provide a lot of materials to help the students make projects they are proud of.
What has been your favorite project to teach and why?
I think my favorite project might’ve been either the digital Webtoon summer camp or the Cartooning and Novel Development class because comic making is a great passion of mine. I study what makes a good manga or comic book as much as I make my own and I really enjoyed teaching the kids the intricacies of comic books like good panel sizes and shapes, why they’re important, camera placement, etc. These are all little details that a normal viewer might not pick up on but overall improve the reading experience.
Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?
Not a specific moment but the little moments that always make me smile are when the kids and teens open up and talk to me like what they did over the weekend or what they want to do for their drawing. Or when they or their parents thank me and show their appreciation to me. It makes me so happy knowing they like me as their teacher and I’m aiding these kids in their journeys as artists.
What do you enjoy outside of One River?
I enjoy walking a lot and enjoying nature. Most of my time outside of One River is spent at home, drawing illustrations, comic making or character art haha! When I need to get out, I normally watch a movie or go out and take my sketchbook and draw nature in all its beauty.
