Monday Thoughts: March Madness
March Madness
Yesterday I visited my mother to celebrate her birthday and during lunch she turned to me and asked, “When are all these damn basketball games over?” Her concern was that “March Madness” was pre-empting her regular shows and she couldn’t understand why there were so many games.
Of course my 77 year-old mother isn’t caught up in the fine art of “bracketology.” Sometimes I do the same thing…miss out on something that is celebrated by most because I simply don’t slow down enough to give it a chance. Recently, I have been consciously trying to take another unfiltered look and absorb what I am missing to better understand trends that have me looking from the outside in.
This sometimes happens to me with food. Right before Whole Foods blew up and made it second hand to eat Brussels Sprouts with Walnuts and Quinoa, I remember my wife coming home with beet salad and stuff and I always said “not for me”. Then miraculously I slowed down, sampled it and developed a new love for things I would never consider eating in my life.
In some very cool way, the same thing is happening right now in Englewood, NJ. People are coming into our space and developing a new interest in emerging artists. At the same time, One River Gallery is developing cred for presenting a program that is starting to get recognition in NYC. Over the last week some of the top curators and artists in the world have visited One River Gallery to check out the Daniel Rios Rodriguez exhibition. People told me we couldn’t do this…they also said I would never eat Kale.
