Creative Destruction

One of the cool things about running a school that teaches visual arts is you get to think about what creative processes people want to study and what they need to study.  From a pure economic perspective it is plainly obvious that digital skills are the required core competencies for today and tomorrow.  So, does that mean people who paint or draw are not inline with todays times?

The term “creative destruction” is actually an economic one that describes the way in which capitalist economic development arises out of the destruction of some prior economic order.  The CD replaced the cassette…the internet is replacing newspaper and broadcasting.  In my view, this is creating a massive opportunity for artists to straddle the fence on what they are passionate about (making art for art sake) while also applying their skills in a commercial sense via graphic design, web design, animation, video, photography and many of the core content spokes of the web.

So, for me the term “creative destruction” is taking on an interesting twist in a world the has never valued creative capabilities like it does today.  Paint, Draw, Build and Sculpt till your heart’s content.  Shoot photography and video.  There’s plenty of work that the refined creative brain will find as you get to deploy the full range of your creative skills in the world we live today.
