Educator Showcase: Nicole DeBarberie
Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
Hi there! I’m Nicole, an artist, mama, wife, and music lover. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts in NYC with a concentration on illustration and art therapy. I also earned my master’s degree and teaching certification at the Monmouth University School of Education. I have taught students of all ages in public school as well as private venues. As an artist and illustrator, I thoroughly enjoy working with ink, pastel, watercolor, and mixed media. Currently, I teach our teen and adult classes as well as write and develop curriculum for One River.

What attracted you to work at One River School?
One River cultivates a transformative artistic environment through a true immersion of the arts. From the innovative curriculum that is inspired by contemporary artists, to the exciting events and gallery space, I felt and still feel very connected to our school’s mission.
How would you describe what it is like to teach here?
Teaching at One River is an opportunity to encourage and explore creative problem solving as well develop strong relationships with students of all ages on their artistic journey.
What makes attending classes at One River fun and compelling?
I am really passionate about creating a studio environment at One River that is much more than simply learning about techniques and completing a piece of artwork. Before students even enter the studio, I try to set a relaxing, yet exciting atmosphere through the right musical vibe and having samples and demos ready to go. Also, really focusing on and immersing students in the PROCESS of creating art (versus the product) and the many incredible benefits it has on the whole person is something very important to me.
Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?
Two years ago, I organized a Maker’s Fair at our Middletown location and the determination and camaraderie amongst our students and community was so incredibly inspiring. Lack of confidence can be prevalent amongst new artists, so to see each student proudly stand by their work was a profoundly rewarding experience for everyone.

What do you enjoy outside of One River?
Outside of teaching and developing curriculum for One River, I enjoy tinkering with my many plants and crystals, listening to 80’s new wave music, and adventuring with my daughters Isabella and Ruby, my husband John, and our dog, Sammy.
