The Value of Art Education

The value of art to those who undertake it - from youth to teens and even adults - is immense. From building well-rounded individuals, to the social, emotional and interpersonal development skills it fosters, the advantages of art are vast. (Source:  American Academy of Arts & Sciences)

Allison Belaks

A few years ago I realized that I think in pictures, and drawings were easier to put on paper for me than words. It’s an easy way for me to express myself.

Bolstered Academic Achievement

Research has found that students who had increased arts education experiences saw improvements in writing achievement, emotional and cognitive empathy, school engagement, and higher education aspirations.

Better Mental Health

Art has also been highly associated with improvements in mental health and happiness. Engagement with the arts can also lead to greater prosocial behaviors within communities. Just look at the examples here at One River with our Kindness Project promoting Autism Awareness Month.

Advanced Critical Thinking

At a time when social media prevalence continues to be high with an increasing use of A.I., the focus on critical thinking and creativity from art is intrinsically important. With art many times having complexities and layered elements, it teaches students the process of observation and study, and they learn to observe the world more closely.

Careers in the Arts

"Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life."

For many who have pursued their passion for the arts, this quote - that has long been attributed to Confucius - is the reality. And, according to multiple studies in the U.S. and Europe, artists typically reveal significantly higher job satisfaction and happiness with their work than non-artists. (Source:  Science Direct)

Value of One River School Curriculum

Intentionally Designed Like None Other

With so many options available to today’s artists, the One River curriculum was designed to enable students to explore all that the arts have to offer, from traditional studio art courses in painting, sketching, sculpture and more, to classes offered in our state-of-the art digital design labs.

Within secondary education, it is rare that you get the opportunity to steer student artists toward trajectories that hold depth and weight for their individualized artistic journey. At One River, I am able to do that while supporting more of a community-based program.
