Tell us a little bit about you and your background.

My Name is Miguel and I was born in Mexico. When I was two and a half my parents decided to migrate to the U.S. Most of my childhood was about trying to adapt to a new environment and culture. Art never felt like I needed to fit in or be something, it allowed me to simply be who I was and embrace all. It has taught me to be patient and to always go within to connect with my own Spirit and God.

I received my B.F.A from Laguna College of Art and Design. The college provided a great foundation for understanding how to paint and draw the natural world. Painting is a life long journey of exploration which I feel very lucky to be a part of as it is how my soul expresses what it loves and feels.

It has been a blessing to share with others the process of painting and to see them explore their inner world as they wish through image making.

What attracted you to work at One River School?

The wide range of subjects being taught within one location is great to experience because it provides a well rounded introduction to future careers for our artists.

How would you describe what it is like to teach here?

Teaching at One River is like Peanut Butter and Jelly. They are completely different but pair together really well. Everyone is super supportive and has their own strengths within what they are teaching, combined we are a great group that balance one another.

What has been your favorite project to teach and why?

“The Kindness Project” has been one of my favorites because it encourages students to focus on positive affirmations and how positive thinking can create great change both when spoken and read by ourselves or others.

Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?

Having our Adult Art Showcase was a very special moment because all the students, faculty, and family could fully absorb the passion and dedication of the work displayed.  Sharing the experience of studio work and gallery presentation for our students was an honor to be a part of with them. I feel grateful to be on this journey.

What do you enjoy outside of One River?

I love growing roses just as much as I like painting them. There are so many varieties but my favorites are old roses and English roses.
