Tell us a little bit about you and your background.

Here’s a bit from my bio:

Born in Dallas, TX in 1980, Jonathan embarked on his artistic journey at the University of Pennsylvania in 2002, delving into basic drawing and figure drawing. Seeking rigorous training, he joined the classical realist atelier, Pantura Studios, under masters Hans-Peter Szameit and Sanna Tomac at 22. After nearly four years of intense classical studies, he moved to Dallas, TX, where he developed his body of work while teaching traditional atelier methods.

In 2008 Jonathan founded Classical Art Online, pioneering online atelier education. He later expanded his instructional reach to Schoolism, offering the highly successful classes, Essentials of Realism, Understanding Textures. With numerous sold paintings and works featured in collections across the US, Jonathan’s art has been showcased in national and local invitational exhibitions for many years.

Throughout his 23 year career, Jonathan has also freelanced, with digital work, as a professional illustrator and animator.  He’s been involved in numerous game, book, and illustration related endeavors. He currently resides in Frisco, TX., with his wife, three children, and his dog Daisy.

What attracted you to work at One River School?

I have been teaching online for close to two decades and I was looking for an opportunity to get involved locally. On a whim, I walked into One River School to see what it was all about. I fell in love with the mission and vibe of the school. I wanted to get involved and help in whatever way possible.

How would you describe what it’s like to teach here?

It’s fun, rewarding, and keeps you on your toes! The varied curriculum provides a wonderful way to show students that fundamentals transcend style, medium, or taste. Students can learn the fundamentals in an exciting and fresh way. It’s a joy to get to know the students, young and old, and see them grow in their ability.

What has been your favorite project to teach and why?

I love seeing kids and adults make connections and grow as artists. The excitement of the students to learn keeps me engaged and keeps my artistic fire burning!  It’s inspiring to see them excited about the lessons and the methodology.

Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?

One of my favorite moments is in reference to a student that came to class on a regular basis, but did not engage at all. This student often seemed as if they were ignoring what I was teaching. However, during one lesson there was a breakthrough! The student looked at me and said, “I can’t believe I did this…this is actually really good.” From that moment onward that student has been engaged and has been growing quite a bit. It’s been a privilege to help that student see their value as an artist and as a person!

What do you enjoy outside of One River?

Any time I can spend with my wife (of 23 years) and my kids is cherished time! I also love most of the art projects I’m hired to make. I’m currently working as part of a team on a game project, working on various illustrations, and also creating my own animated show which is a strange mix of adventure time and dick tracy. I’m also obsessed with jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and wrestling. My son and I train at the same MMA gym together and we have a blast. My friends think I’m crazy for doing it, but I’m addicted to it and I love the learning process and how it pushes you mentally. There are so many parallels to art and art training in MMA as well. I also love horticulture quite a bit. I’ve got quite a few plants and cacti in my backyard. My wife and I spend time planting and growing things together.
