Tell us a little bit about you and your background

I grew up in Maplewood NJ, the next town over from Millburn, and constantly exposed to art of all kinds. My dad makes and repairs stained glass windows and is always researching different artistic styles and influences, from natural to architectural and industrial design, so I grew up learning to see the world through that artistic lens. I went on to receive my BFA from Bucknell University and my Masters from Rutgers University, both in Art History with a concentration on Hudson River School painting. Though I joke that I can only draw stick figures, I find myself attuned to color patterns and design elements in my everyday life.

What attracted you to work at One River School?

I would often drive by the Millburn location and was intrigued by the school. I also met Kristin Stazzone in 2015 working at Montclair Art Museum summer camp, and she frequently mentioned that One River was always looking to hire and is a great place to work. When I saw that she had opened the Clark location, I was finally looking for a job, and I reached out (don’t knock the power of networking)! I interviewed with her and then with Erin Champion and I loved the atmosphere they foster in their schools of a homey space to be yourself and make art while finding and hanging out with your best friends.

How would you describe your team?

The Millburn team is eclectic and vivacious with a good balance of shenanigans and hard work! We are able to bounce ideas off each other and we enjoy each other’s company. We all have our areas of expertise, but are always more than willing to jump in and help with whatever is needed to get the most time sensitive jobs done. Most importantly, we all share the common goal of making sure each student feels welcome and is able to grow and feel safe taking artistic risks.

What do you think we do best at One River?

I think One River Millburn does an excellent job of fostering a larger sense of community with our students and parents. Everyone knows that we are always willing to help. The parents know that this is a safe place to send their children. We really strive to talk with and get to know each and every one of our students, and learn even more about them through their art.

Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?

The return to class in the fall is always a fun time. It’s awesome to see so many of our students return after the summer, and catch up with them about their adventures. It’s also amazing to see new students make friends in their classes and how excited they get to come to class each week.

Who or what motivates you?

Knowing that the concepts and practices we teach the students everyday can stay with them for a lifetime. Also seeing the friendships that develop between students in classes and camps over the course of a week or two is a great reminder that we aren’t just teaching art, we’re also helping students socialize and grow.

What do you enjoy outside of One River?

I enjoy taking care of all of my indoor and outdoor plants, reading and doing crossword puzzles, hiking with my girlfriend and socializing with our large and local extended families.
