Educator Showcase: Dana Kjeldaas
Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
I’m an art educator at One River specializing in digital art. I started drawing digitally when I got my first WACOM tablet in 2014, and haven’t stopped, beginning my freelance illustrator career in 2015. I was attracted to the aesthetics found in character concept art and decided to pursue it for my higher education, attending Montclair State University and graduating in 2021 with a BFA in Animation/Illustration. Since graduating I have been furthering my education in the realm of 3D sculpture in my free time. My art style is heavily influenced by the fantasy and horror genre.
What attracted you to work at One River School?
During my high school years I actually used to be a student in the TAS at One River before I left for college to pursue my degree. Having the insight of being a student at One River kindled my interest as an educator, and I am happy to share my insights of the art industries with aspirational students, along with my personal tips and tricks!
How would you describe what it is like to teach here?
Every day is a new adventure. I never know what students will come up with and being able to guide them on their journey in art is incredibly fulfilling. My co-workers are very friendly and sociable, and I look forward to coming in to teach at One River.
What makes attending classes at One River fun and compelling?
The casual environment lets students flourish and discover their own styles in real time while making friends! Students are encouraged to discuss their work with peers and learn how to critique art. They’re also encouraged to think outside the box, having their own freedom to work on their projects in whatever direction they desire.

Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?
Teaching students how to animate for the first time made me realize I’m really making a difference in the lives of my students. The looks of amazement as their drawings came to life before them is something I think fondly of!
What do you enjoy outside of One River?
I enjoy exploring NYC and Improv. I also enjoy attending local alternative rock / metal shows, and exploring alt fashion scenes where ever I can find them.
