Educator Showcase: Emma Reid

Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
Art class has always been my favorite place in the world! I graduated from SUNY Purchase with a degree in Graphic Design in 2020. I worked as both a TA/tutor and a freelancer in college, exploring everything from tattoo design to university program branding. I was working as a freelancer when I found One River, where I started teaching digital classes part-time. I slowly became more involved in the One River community and am now happy to be part of the full time staff.

What attracted you to work at One River School?
I found so much joy as a TA teaching digital programs to design students and providing them with the tools they needed to succeed. I knew I wanted to continue in the art education field, but wasn’t sure where to start. When I first came across One River, I was elated to have found such a unique art school. The programming provides students not only with new skills, but with a community of other growing artists. I think every artist wishes they had that when they were younger (or now!)
How would you describe what it is like to teach here?
Teaching at One River is an incredibly one-of-a-kind experience. All full-time staff and teachers work together as a collective to make the student experience as great as possible. Even teachers who are only here for an hour a week are so committed to their students’ journeys. The best part of teaching here is watching long-term students grow into serious artists and finding their own passions and style.

What makes attending classes at One River fun and compelling?
One River programming prioritizes the needs of individual students. Although lesson plans are very technically driven and always provide contemporary inspiration, they also allow room for students to explore themes that have personal meaning to them. It truly emulates the college experience, even with our youngest students, and entwines skill and fun in a balanced manner. I see One River as the best possible opportunity for students to get a foot in the door of becoming a professional artist.

Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?
My favorite One River moment happened when I was talking with one of my long-time 3rd-5th digital students. She told me “one day, I want to be so good at Photoshop that I can teach classes here!” It was such an endearing moment, and not only made me feel valued as a teacher, but acted as a testament to how our classes build confidence.
What do you enjoy outside of One River?
Outside of One River, I enjoy making art, hiking, and taking care of my pets! I have a dog, cat, hamster, gerbil, and gecko. 🙂
