Music and Art Make People Better

It is a blessing when you find your passion in life. For me, I found it through creative education.

I have seen thousands and thousands of kids grow up with music and art…and I have seen them become better people who are more equipped to navigate life, make friends and demonstrate the commitment it takes to master something that is really difficult.

Last weekend, my son Jason Ross played his final show in Detroit with School of Rock after a ten day national tour with the School of Rock All Stars. It was quite the emotional weekend watching him, but it turned out to be a beautiful right of passage when unsolicited I was told by countless kids what a leader and mentor Jason was to each of them on tour.

Music is about collaboration…it is about connecting with others on stage and sharing that energy with people you don’t know in the audience. I am blessed that I get to facilitate this everyday. I am even more blessed that I was able to watch the profound effect that music education has had on my son.

Matt Ross is the Founder of One River School of Art + Design. Since 2012, One River has grown from one location in Englewood, NJ to fifteen schools in six states with a goal to “transform art education” across America. Prior to One River School, Matt was the CEO of School of Rock, where he built the company into the world leader in music education for kids. Prior to his experience with School of Rock, Matt held a variety of management positions in broadcasting, working for diverse media companies such as Clear Channel, CBS and Viacom. He is also active in promoting Autism awareness and supporting emerging artists and is passionate about collecting Contemporary Art with a focus on painting, mixed media and drawing.
