Katherine Bradford

Last Friday I had the pleasure to visit with Katherine Bradford in her Williamsburg studio. In a world of artwork that often looks the same, funneled through MFA programs that create certain types of outcomes, Katherine is an American original who embodies everything I love about art and artists.

Her road has been much like many people who spend their life making art.  The life of a studio artist requires solitude and Katherine has avoided the “trends” of the art world in the most obvious way. The artist community reveres her work and while she is in the collection of a number of major museums, at 74 years old, Katherine has not developed the kind of collector following that she has deserved.

Last month Katherine had her first show at the Canada Gallery and it was among the most inspiring that I have seen in the last five years. Her “iconic” imagery is idiosyncratic…it’s moody and interesting, strange and uplifting, dark and imaginative. I am out of adjectives. My hour with Katherine helped me better understand why I do what I do and the soul of artists like Katherine.
