The Rhythm Of Collecting Art

What do you think is the most compelling thing about collecting contemporary art?  No, it’s not the money made selling it.  It’s the journey of learning and discovering new artists that you connect with.   In some ways it is sort of like when I used to listen to music and have that amazing reaction to a new song with a new sound that I never heard before.

When you really study this space, you learn there are so many artists to choose from that it actually becomes easier to decipher what you like.  That seems counterintuitive but the more art you look at, the stronger your senses get in filtering what is not for you and conversely what blows your mind.  Joanne Greenbaum is someone I have been following for awhile and finally got to see her work live at Rachel Uffner Gallery last Saturday.

Joanne is an icon in today’s art world and at 60 years old she is making the best work she has ever made.  There is something fresh, sophisticated, musical and raw about her paintings.  They have crazy energy and peaceful purpose at the same time.   Joanne Greenbaum lives and works in New York City.  Over the past twenty years she has participated in numerous gallery and museum shows in the U.S. and Europe.

I love the fact that Joanne is doing this for a lifetime and I am just now talking about her like she just started painting this year.  Life is about discovery and that is the rhythm of collecting art.
