Thanksgiving Hunger Games

When I was growing up, I used to play this game on Thanksgiving that was my form of the hunger games.  I would eat as little as possible (or virtually nothing) until the Thanksgiving meal was served… then the game was on.  And, like most rigorous games, there were consequences to how I called my plays.
Do I eat the first plate super fast or ease into it?  Load up on starch early or save room for the Sweet Potato Pie (my fav) for the later course?  Sometimes gamesmanship sank in…my brothers were older, bigger and less strategic…they just ate what they loved and what was in front of them, which caused immediate shortages on some of my favorite things.  “Mom, Mitchell has too much stuffing!
Nowadays, the games are off.  Most of the afternoon I pick on little things: olives, cheese, chips, salsa and crackers.  When game time comes, I get out of the way and watch my two teenage boys devour the meal and I realize that just like football, my hunger game is best left for the young.
Happy Thanksgiving.
