The Artworld Visits One River School

I always envisioned building a space that allowed our students to have fun, make really cool artwork and learn from inspiring teachers. However, it was also a dream of mine to connect One River School of Art + Design to the artworld at large.

In just the last few weeks we have had studio visits from artists I revere: Katherine Bradford andJohannes VanDerbeek. Watching them connect and do critiques with our teen residency students was priceless. Nicelle Beauchene, who runs one of the best emerging art galleries in the world, was also in the house connecting and giving feedback to our students.

And, this past weekend we opened our latest exhibition with Shara Hughes. Shara and I sat for an artist talk and she shared some of the qualities that I believe makes her a special artist. These thoughts really had me thinking about what drives creativity and excellence.

We are blessed to have access to people who care about giving back and it’s really exciting to see people who operate on the world art stage joining our community at One River.

Matt Ross

Matt Ross is the Founder of One River School of Art + Design. Since 2012, One River has grown from one location in Englewood, NJ to fifteen schools in six states with a goal to “transform art education” across America. Prior to One River School, Matt was the CEO of School of Rock, where he built the company into the world leader in music education for kids. Prior to his experience with School of Rock, Matt held a variety of management positions in broadcasting, working for diverse media companies such as Clear Channel, CBS and Viacom. He is also active in promoting Autism awareness and supporting emerging artists and is passionate about collecting Contemporary Art with a focus on painting, mixed media and drawing.
