Educator Showcase: Emily Evanowski
Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
I am a Jersey raised educator and illustrator who graduated from SVA with a major in Illustration in 2015. I ended up becoming a teacher in 2019 and have been ever since.
What attracted you to work at One River School?
I was looking to expand my teaching horizons and teach in new ways, and some of my students had mentioned coming to One River, so I immediately jumped at the opportunity when there was an opening.
How would you describe what it is like to teach here?
Working at One River is such a delightful experience, it really lets me as an educator work with different projects and students, and lets me have unique experiences and opportunities that I wouldn’t have had normally in an education space. It’s not just the regular lessons I teach every week, but the events and workshops that are hosted by One River really let me work with the local communities we have here at large, and I find that super enriching.
What has been your favorite project to teach and why?
One of my favorite projects to teach was the last (winter) showcase projects from the Teen Art Shuffle Plus and Teen Focus on Manga classes! The Shuffle Plus class got to work on travel posters of their favorite places, real or fictional, and the Manga students created a full line up of their own original characters. Being able to see my students really shine with their creativity and show off their development of skills was a highlight of the whole project, and they turned out great!
Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?
A special One River moment that really stands out for me is the big team meeting we get before the school year and before the summer. Because of the busy nature of the schools, the teachers and staff don’t get to spend a lot of time with each other unless we’re working around the same time, so these meetings let us get to chat with each other, catch up, and make new friends.
What do you enjoy outside of One River?
Outside of One River I really enjoy working on my personal projects and hobbies such as reading, making my own work, and playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends.
