Team Showcase: Shannon McGillick
Tell us a little bit about you and your background
I was born and raised in South Jersey to my wonderful parents Noreen and Thomas, alongside my two older brothers Kevin and Christopher. My passion for the arts was ignited by the nurturing influence of my mother, who surrounded me with endless creative opportunities from a young age. There were always creative projects around the house for us to do together. Recognizing my passion for the arts, my mother consistently championed my artistic journey. I attribute all of my successes in the arts to her. I’ve since received my BFA from Pace University in Manhattan, and worked in digital marketing before starting at One River in 2020.
What attracted you to work at One River School?
Is it cheesy to call it fate? I lost my prior job in the height of COVID, and began frantically searching for somewhere safe & creative to plant my roots. When I found One River I thought, “I wish there was an art school like this when I was growing up”.
How would you describe your team?
My team is vibrant, cooperative, and endlessly innovative! We deeply value each other’s insights and methods, ensuring that everyone’s voice and approach are valued. The most memorable moments together are those infused with laughter and impromptu dance interludes. Beyond our professional roles, we resonate as a close-knit family, united by respect and shared passion.
What do you think we do best at One River?
At One River, we redefine the art school experience, offering a distinctive blend of creativity and community. I like to think that the school is an oasis where many students come to feel at home. We foster an atmosphere where artists can celebrate their diverse perspectives, challenge each other, and have both physical and emotional security.
Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?
Two moments stand out, and motivate me daily. The first unfolded at a Student Show when a parent approached me with heartfelt gratitude, sharing how I’d positively impacted his daughter’s life and that he was forever grateful to me for helping to guide her. The second moment was during a Teen class where only one of my students had shown up. She was experiencing depression and facing struggles with home life and understanding her sexuality. This unexpected one-on-one class offered her the safe and supportive space she’d been seeking. This was a turning point for us as teacher and student, and she has been my student for over two years now.
What do you enjoy outside of One River?
Outside of One River, I enjoy giving my dog Luna belly scratches, dining out in New York City with my boyfriend Kenny, traveling with my best friends, reading, and cooking. In my personal creative endeavors, I curate art shows for emerging contemporary artists, and I’m rediscovering my love of oil paint.
