Student Showcase: Kathryn Isernia

Tell us a little bit about your journey as a young and developing artist.
Originally before I started my art was bad, when I first started I didn’t take classes as seriously, it was just something fun to do on the weekdays. Once I hit high school I started to take classes more seriously and listen to advice from Mrs.Julia. Once I did that my art started to really improve.
Which has been your favorite project to work on at One River and why?

Probably the Nicholas Party projects, I like how bright you can get the pastels. I feel like I have a lot of freedom within the project to explore. There were some restrictions but I felt like I had a lot of freedom with both the still life and the portrait project. Pastels are low key the best medium, I really like working with them. The project made me expand my understanding of color by challenging me to not use realistic colors.
Describe One River in 3 words and tell us why.
Best Art School: One River gives you a lot of creative freedom. I really like that you have to expand your creative borders by basing your projects on other artists. It makes you expand your skills and knowledge. Teachers will help you work within whatever style you want, they are all very knowledgeable about any style, both realistic, cartoon or abstract style. The teachers are also very knowledgeable about the basics and are really good at teaching those to students in a way that makes sense. The teachers are really great at encouraging and hyping up their students and their work.

What would you tell people who’ve never dabbled in art making are the real benefits to trying it?
It’s a good way to express yourself. If you haven’t dabbled in it and you have the time for it you should definitely invest some time in it! Even if you just doodle in a notebook for 5 minutes a day it’s a really good way to reset your emotions. If you are angry or sad you can channel that energy into your art.
