Team Showcase: Madelyn Zachara

Madelyn Zachara, Assistant Director of Member Services, One River School Millburn (NJ)

Tell us a little bit about you and your background.

Growing up I was always attracted to color theory and was constantly exposed to art of all kinds. My dad makes and repairs stained glass windows and is always researching different artistic styles and influences, from nature to architecture and industrial design. I went on to receive my BFA from Bucknell University and my Masters from Rutgers University, both in Art History with a concentration on Hudson River School painting. While I joke that I draw like a 3rd grader, I find myself very attuned to color patterns and design elements in my everyday life.

What attracted you to work at One River School?

Kristin Stazzone! We met back in 2015 working at the Montclair Art Museum summer camp, and for several years after we graduated from college she would regularly message me saying One River was always looking to hire and is a great place to work. When I saw that she had opened the Clark location, I was finally looking for a job, and I reached out (don’t knock the power of networking)! I interviewed with her and then with Erin Champion and I loved the atmosphere they create in their schools, of a homey space to be yourself and make art while finding and hanging out with your best friends.

How would you describe your team?

The Millburn team is eclectic and vivacious with a good balance of shenanigans and hard work! We are able to bounce ideas off each other and we enjoy each other’s company. Most importantly, we all share the common goal of making sure each student feels welcome and is able to grow and feel safe taking artistic risks.

What do you think we do best at One River?

I think One River Millburn does an excellent job of fostering a larger sense of community with our students and parents. Everyone knows that we are always willing to help. The parents know that this is a safe place to send their children. We really strive to talk to and get to know each and every one of our students, and learn even more about them through their art.

Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?

Our most recent student show! It was my first time exhibiting all of our classes in one show, and the turnout was amazing! I loved seeing our students and their families marveling at not only their own artworks but those of their friends and classmates. It was so fulfilling to have parents coming up to me and my team and telling us how much their kids love coming to class. This show truly exposed the vibrance of One River Millburn and how engaged we are with our community!

What do you enjoy outside of One River?

I thrive taking care of all my plants, reading, hiking with my girlfriend and socializing with our large and local extended families.
