Team Showcase: Cassandra Basile
Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
I’m from Southern California (yes, I totally miss the weather!) and attended school at California State University, Northridge. From there, I moved to New York, where I’ve been for the last 11 years, to pursue a career in art management and education. Throughout my career, I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world, meet incredible people, and grow as person. My favorite role has been serving as Director at One River for the last 3.5 years where I have felt so energized by the challenges, opportunities, and people around me.

What attracted you to work at One River School?
When I applied to One River School, I had recently moved with my husband and our young son to Long Island. I was looking for a rewarding, creative job that I would feel excited to go to every day and one where I would feel valued. When I interviewed and eventually accepted the position, I was thrilled, but I also knew I was taking a chance–the school wasn’t even open yet! And the work would soon begin to grow the school from a seed into a tall oak tree. From the time I started my role, to the time the school opened, I had already achieved so much and grown as a manager and leader but it was only the beginning.
How would you describe your role here?
My role as Director is oversee, manage, and guide the school to success! This means I am working to guide the team to make the best choices for our students and families. I’m helping my colleagues to be advocates for creative education and to share the value of our programs because there is so much joy to be found in living a creative life.
What do you think we do best at One River?
One River has brought me so much joy. I’ve never laughed so much in my life than I have working here. The children, in particular, are so funny and creative that I worry I might scare parents when I talk about how cool their kids are. One River brings on good people to shepherd students through their creative journey and it is that–a journey. A creative journey is possible when you have present, mindful, and talented people at the helm and I think One River is particularly great at creating the space for that journey to take place.
Is there a special One River moment that stands out for you?
I wish I had a single moment that stands out for me–there are too many to count! I will say our first student s
how was a huge stand-out for me. I smiled so hard, my cheeks were sore! I was blown away by how gorgeous the show looked and how many people showed up. It was a high bar to set but I’m so glad we did because it made each show thereafter an even more exciting event with even more smiles.
What do you enjoy outside of One River?
Outside of One River, I am a mom, a wife, a friend, and a sister. I have two young children: Anthony and Penelope. Anthony is only four years old but he loves drawing, painting, and sculpting all types of bugs and animals. My husband and I enjoy cooking, spending time with family, and going on trips when we can.
