Picasso’s Guitars
In the early 20th century, Picasso spent a few years working on transforming the guitar into a sculptural wall relief object. A few years ago, MOMA celebrated this work by presenting an exhibition of Picasso’s Guitars and if you know anything about me, you know that I am obsessed with the guitar. To see how Picasso transformed this object into a work of visual art was one of the coolest things I have seen and has become the inspiration for a staple project for our youngest students.
For the third summer in a row we ran a one-week camp motivated by Picasso’s Guitars. I am surethese pictures tell a thousand stories…very simply, these inquisitive young girls created inspirational objects that started as drawings and ending up as sculptural objects.
When people ask me about what we do, I often say we are simply a place that creates a sense of wonder. I see it on our faces: the staff and our students. People come together to get away from the noise of the world and sometimes they make beautiful music…or musical objects that are just beautiful.
