Art Collecting – Everything You Need to Know

There seems to be more and more interest in art collecting today and I am thrilled about it. For one, we are embarking on our most ambitious year of exhibitions beginning next week with our first opening of the year featuring work from Ryan Schneider. Ryan is one of a series of eight artists that we will show in 2016…each of them are carving out their space in the art world and gaining support from collectors and critics.

I am particularly bullish on art collecting for so many reasons. First of all, there is nothing like waking up everyday in a place with one of a kind artwork that you have personally selected. Secondly, the journey of doing this and getting to know artists along the way simply enriches your life. You get to be a patron…a supporter of culture by endorsing artists who make their living creating objects that they share with the world.

I never mentioned the economics, but art is an amazing asset and should be in everyone’s investment strategy. Think 10% of your investable cash…these are tangible assets that enhance the quality of your life and by the way, your money earns zero sitting in the bank today!

Matt Ross is the Founder and CEO of One River School of Art + Design. Since 2012, One River has grown from one location in Englewood, NJ to fourteen schools in six states with a goal to “transform art education” across America. Prior to One River School, Matt was the CEO of School of Rock, where he built the company into the world leader in music education for kids. Prior to his experience with School of Rock, Matt held a variety of management positions in broadcasting, working for diverse media companies such as Clear Channel, CBS and Viacom. He is also active in promoting Autism awareness and supporting emerging artists and is passionate about collecting Contemporary Art with a focus on painting, mixed media and drawing.
